Captain America : the winter soldier Review

Let’s recap, as the Marvel Masterplan enters its post-Avengers phase (a.k.a. ‘Sequels for Everybody’). Thor stands for whiskery adventure fantasies set on far-off worlds (and, occasionally, Earth). Iron Man is smart-aleck comedy which makes a point of being irreverent about everything, even the Marvel Masterplan. Hulk is the underachiever of the bunch, having twice been tried in solo outings and found wanting.
Then there’s Captain America (played by Chris Evans), who’s officially a hit as his first sequel – The Winter Soldier – is unleashed upon the multiplex, yet still seems a bit underwhelming. His superpowers are paltry and dull; he’s very strong, which is why he can jump out of planes without a parachute, and has a shield which he mostly uses to defend himself though he’ll sometimes throw it and catch it again, in the manner of Thor’s hammer – but overall he’s not a very interesting superhero. He’s a well-known straight arrow, and doesn’t crack jokes à la Tony Stark. He doesn’t turn green when you make him angry. He’s a man out of Time, having travelled from the 1940s to the 21st century – but not much is done with that, beyond a funny gag that shows him keeping a list of things he needs to catch up on (they include Thai food, Steve Jobs and “Star Wars/Trek”). Then there’s the whole patriotic thing, which leaves a sour taste for non-Americans.

The Cap is a super-soldier, a world-class fighting machine – designed for WW2, which is when the first Captain America was set. That film was decent but bland, and I wasn’t really aching for a sequel – but The Winter Soldier turns out to be a pleasant surprise, for two reasons. First, it quietly acknowledges that Cap isn’t much of a superhero, and doesn’t really operate as a comic-book movie; it’s closer toMission: Impossible, big-budget action with realistic visuals and a plot where the Agency (in this case SHIELD) is compromised. Second, it undermines the gung-ho aspects by being topical and explicitly political. This is a film made in the wake of Edward Snowden, the NSA scandal, and a changing climate in general.
“This isn’t freedom. This is fear!” says Captain America when Nick Fury of SHIELD (the ever-belligerent Samuel L. Jackson) explains his preventive strategy to combat terrorism, a system that’ll spot (and stop) a terrorist before he even does anything. The script finesses this later, when it turns out that SHIELD has been infiltrated by the quasi-Nazi HYDRA – but in fact “Zola’s Algorithm”, an evil plan that deals predictive justice by identifying future ‘enemies’ and taking them out pre-emptively, sounds very similar to Fury’s own plan. It’s surely no accident that Cap goes up against his employers as well as the Nazis: “As difficult as it is to accept, Captain America is a fugitive from SHIELD!”.
This is good stuff, at least for those of us with limited interest in gadgets and shoot-outs. There’s a big noisy climax, and it’s well done – the action scenes are coherently edited, and the mass destruction for its own sake isn’t too blatant – but blockbusters are most interesting for how they reflect their times, and it does look like a major libertarian impulse is gathering speed in America (prizing individual freedom above all, whether in the Tea Party movement or social issues like gay marriage) after the relative lockstep of the post-9/11 years. The only slight oddity is that soldiers still command respect
So much for subtext, and trying to view a Marvel sequel through the prism of politics. (Don’t blame me! The film made me do it!) The real news for fans is that Anthony Mackie turns up as ‘the Falcon’, proudly touted as the first African-American superhero, and of course you’ve got Scarlett Johansson – this week’s clear MVP, between this and Her – kicking ass and taking names as ‘Black Widow’, her charisma making up for Evans’ wet-noodle presence. Jackson helps too, engaging in some world-class snarling (“I am not obliged to do anything!”) and there’s even Robert Redford, his iconic presence – and well-known political activism – putting a seal of approval on the film’s ambitions.
The Winter Soldier has some of the usual problems. It’s frankly overlong at 136 minutes. The climax is thrilling but still seems implausible, given that Cap’s mission is to change the servers on three heli-carriers (a mission best accomplished stealthily, not by advertising his presence and getting in a full-on showdown with the baddies). But why quibble, when the film is so solid? On this evidence, Captain America is the Marvel franchise that goes off in bold, unexpected directions to disguise the fact that its hero is so boring. Could be worse.

Movie 'Youngistan" Review

Unlike Prakash Jha's "Raajneeti", "Youngistaan" doesn't take itself too seriously. There is no attempt here to mythicize or demonize the politicians.

Dishkiyaoon Movie Review

You know you aren't needed back in the industry when you disappear and aren't remembered by anyone. As rude as this sounds but we wish it could've been made clear to Mr. Harman Baweja who hardly shows any sign of improvement in his comeback film after a long haul -Dishkiyaoon.

O Teri movie Review

Possibly touted as the new age Andaz Apna Apna, this film is a loose concept forever in search of a concrete plot. Watch it only if you have absolutely nothing else to do this weekend –not to kill the time, but to realise the value of your precious hours and money

Gangs Of Ghost movie review

Satish Kaushik's directorial venture Gang of Ghosts released this Friday.

The film is about a haunted house, which is being pulled down and will be replaced by a glitzy shopping mall. Ghosts belonging to different eras, social spheres and different parts of India reside in this house. The ghosts decide to fight their own battle against rampant development and win it.

With actors like Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav, Saurabh Shukla, Parambrata Chaterjee and Yashpal Sharma, this official remake of Bengali film Bhooter Bhabishyat promised an interesting satire.

However, the movie, that also features Jackie Shroff and Meera Chopra, pathetically fails.Despite all genuine efforts at highlighting the problems of urbanisation, Gang of Ghosts fails to leave a mark. It talks about the evil of real estate, politicians caring only for their votes and more such problems in our society. Unfortunately, the film does not offer the right build-up for the audience to empathise with the pain of the characters.

You can certainly miss this Bhootiyapanthi, as they call it in the film.

Ragni MMS 2 movie review

Ekta Kapoor -- the television queen, a self-confessed fan of horror and maker of adult comedies -- knew what she was getting into when she conceptualised Ragini MMS 2, a horrorex, the first-of-its kind for Indian cinema. She never cares about critics, she has always maintained. But does she care about her audiences?

when I ventured out to watch Sunny Leone's Ragini MMS 2, The enthusiastic crowd cheered when the film began. A lowdown on our protagonist's opening scene: Sunny Leone is sitting naked in a bathtub, and the song Baby doll begins with camera strategically zooming in on her assets. The cheers metamorphosed into lewd comments from a section of audience who had obviously recieved their money's worth from the film. What about the rest of the audience? Well, after a while, you cannot help but get affected by the obscenity not only on screen but also from the people who are sitting next to you.

But, it's a horrorex afterall. Didn't Ekta warn you?

In Ekta's world, the ghost goes naked, gets cosy in the shower, seduces you to a lake only to kill you. What's more? She can also kill you while in the act. Maybe there's a lesson here: think twice before a one-night stand.

Besides the overdose of sex, smooches and skimpy outfits, the film also has Kya Kool Hain Hum (another Ekta Kapoor movie) brand of humour that you were not promised before watching the movie. The Grand Masti lovers can rejoice again! The haters can stay home and do better things.

As far as horror is concerned, it dominates the second half, especially the climax. The sex and the adult comedy, however, diminishes the impact of spooky moments. The moment you begin to feel scared, there's something or the other to break the momentum.
Sunny Leone is the best and the worst thing about Ragini MMS 2. Sadly, the sexually charged scenes shift the limelight from her acting prowess to her body. However, in the scenes where the actor takes charge from the seductress in her, she's a powerpacked performer. The lady has a great screen presence and a potential that could be explored better than her skin.

Sandhya Mridul plays a behenji-turned-mod, a character she's never attempted before and excels at it. Her much-publicised kiss with Sunny Leone, though shot in an aesthetic way, was unwarranted. She enjoys her character though, which translates into a confident performance.
Divya Dutta, who plays Ragini's psychiatrist, is an actor of great mettle and excels again, but she should try different roles, before she becomes repetitive.

Parvin Dabbas, as a kinky director, impresses. Saahil Prem as Satya, the love interest of Sunny Leone delivers a decent performance. Kainaz Motivala (Ragini), in her brief appearance, does justice to her character.

Our verdict
Don't watch it if you are a serious horror lover. Go for it if you can appreciate Grand Masti humour and Sunny Leone's body.

The film within the film
Rocks, a filmmaker who's going through a rough phase, decides to make a horrorex with adult star Sunny Leone and some television actors. His film is based on the real life story of Ragini and Uday  (the story of the first installment of Ragini MMS) whose dirty weekend turns into a spooky experience when Uday gets killed by a chudail (ghost) and Ragini lands up in a mental asylum.

Need for speed movie review

Scott Waugh's 'Need For Speed', starring Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Michael Keaton, Scott Mescudi, Rami Malek, Ramon Rodriguez and Dakota Johnson, is engaging and entertaining

If Abba had immortalized "The winner takes it all" in 1980s, then "Need For Speed" reiterates it with "The winner takes it all and the losers have to walk home".

Powered with supersonic sound, accelerated cars and adolescent indulgence, this revenge tale would appeal to car lovers and speed fanatics who would love to exist in a world without rules.

The film's plot revolves around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) a mechanic-cum-ace underground racer who lives in Mt. Kisco, New York. Along with a group of friends, he is struggling to keep his auto shop business afloat.

Circumstances make him agree to a temporary partnership with Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) a long-time opponent who is now a professional racer and car broker. Dino is in possession of the prototype 50th-anniversary Ford Mustang that legendary designer Carroll Shelby was working on at the time of his death in 2012. The car is incomplete and its sale is pending.

So, the deal is that Tobey modifies the Ford Mustang in exchange of 25 percent cut of the sales price, which amounts to a whooping 500,000 dollars.

After out-performing the project, Tobey manages to sell the car to Dino's British buyer for nearly three million dollars. This infuriates Dino.

Arrogant and insecure Dino challenges Tobey and Pete, one of Tobey's friends and a race enthusiast, to an impromptu "winner-takes-it-all" road race in three identical, street-illegal Swedish Koenigsegg super cars.

The race leads to a tragic consequence, where Pete is killed. Dino frames Tobey for Pete's death. Tobey does his time in prison and emerges two years later with revenge on his mind.

In his endeavour, Tobey is assisted by the British buyer's confidante, Julia (Imogen Poots), who secures for Tobey that same Mustang dream machine he restored. His ex-flame and Pete's sister Anita Coleman (Dakota Johnson) along with his garage buddies Finn (Rami Malek), the expert tuner, Joe (Ramon Rodriguez), who drives the support truck, and Benny (Scott Mescudi) who flies a Cessna that never runs out of gas and can spot the police from the sky.

Keeping the adrenaline rushing, the action takes place with feet on the accelerators and everyone driving like maniacs, through traffic infused streets. To add to the tension, the sub-plots include some bounty killers hoping to drive Tobey and Julia off the road on Dino's behest.

The storyline may be flimsy with a few over-the-top moments but the performances are all convincing. Aaron Paul with his husky voice and easy charisma is the perfect bad boy hero, Tobey. His character is well balanced by Imogen's high-spirited personality with damsel in distress tropes.

Dominic Cooper gives a fair performance as Dino, but unfortunately, the character is so underdeveloped, so he seems like a stock cartoon villain. Same is the case with Michael Keaton, who makes a brief appearance as race organiser Monarch. His performance is forced loud, rather than fascinatingly captivating.

Director Scott Waugh who had earlier directed, 'Act of Valor' has strived hard to make 'Need For Speed' an acceptable 'Fast and Furious' substitute with well-choreographed action sequences that involve actual cars and stunt drivers and not computer-generated images.

The visuals are convincing and realistic. The car flip, which killed Pete, can be touted as one of the most spectacular aerial cars flips ever-captured on film.

Overall, the film is engaging and entertaining.

Gunday: Bro Code Fail Alert

Gunday: Bro Code Fail Alert
Bhaisexual (noun): Bad boys with beefy biceps and shaved chests, who love to fight each other after ripping each other’s shirts off. The origin dates back to Bhai films, circa Dabanng.
Meet the Bhaisexuals — bros against buttons — Bikram (Ranveer) and Bala (Arjun), two orphan kids from Bangladesh who took control of the coal trade and made Calcutta their home.
We know it is Calcutta because
a. Every other scene has a visual of the Howrah bridge.
b. Scenes without the Howrah bridge have a nightclub called Calcutta.
c. And scenes without either have Durga Puja.
The boys wear their heart on the sleeve… okay, shirts. We know this because
a. The heroes wear identical shirts with hearts painted on them
b. There’s a scene where they are shown sharing a heart-shaped glass
c. They fall for the girl together and even woo her together with the same song
Otherwise, the boys are totally evil Gunday, their hearts are as black as coal. They are not cool, but all coal.
Imagine if Jai and Veeru switched over to the dark side, became twin Gabbar Singhs and fought over Helen after watching her gyrate to ‘Mehbooba’.
Which brings us to the problem area of the film: Why would we then root for them when they kill a man in front of his brother and scores of innocent policemen? There’s nothing likeable about these goons. If Bala is the trigger-happy angry young man (cue in cliché), Bikram is the more responsible elder brother figure who owes his life to Bala because (ahem, cliché) he once saved his life.
It’s as if director Ali Abbas Zafar borrowed Arjun Kapoor from Ishaqzaade and Ranveer Singh fromRam-Leela (both films that end with lovers who take on the cruel world and prefer to kill and die for love) and never bothered rewriting their characters or changing their wardrobe. He just added Priyanka Chopra for misdirection. Otherwise, this is exactly the same story as Romeo and Juliet but for the fact that the Romeos really love each other more than they love Juliet.
As if those clichés were not enough, we have Irrfan Khan as the worst policeman in Bollywood history. He makes even Jai and Ali (from the Dhoom franchise) look smarter when instead of arresting the goons after framing them for murder, he decides to gift them a cabaret dancer girlfriend to fight over and even orchestrates a public gunfight during Durga Puja, endangering the lives of innocent civilians.
Bikram and Bala predictably end up enemies because one of them breaks the Bro Code and covets the girl in the absence of the other bro.
One becomes good and the other evil as the makers soon decide to employ yet another Bollywood cliché — the Ramayan template. The evil Bala who has sworn “to become blacker than coal” kidnaps “the Sita who claims she has become Ram’s” (short for BikRam’s… Smart no? said the makers as they hi-fived each other).
It would have been all right if the clichés were used for a larger reason. But no, the only point the film wants to make is the biggest cliché of them all — that it is the System *yawn* that breeds Gunday!
If only the director had the guts to channel all the sexual tension into a Brokeback Mountain-esque love story instead of this faux bromance. Unfortunately, the characters are completely in denial of this chemistry and stick to the unwritten rules of the System. That Bollywood heroes who love each other to death can only be brothers even if they aren’t blood related… It’s a strange Bollywood phenomenon. The bromance of the Bhaisexuals.
Genre: Action
Director: Ali Abbas Zafar
Cast: Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Priyanka Chopra
Storyline: Instead of arresting two bad boys after framing them, the worst police officer in Bollywood history gifts them a cabaret dancer to fight over.
Bottomline: Once Upon a Time in Calcutta Dobaara

Things you don't know about Salman khan

Salman Khan is 47 at present. He had an early birthday present in Dabangg 2 which has hit the box office jackpot. Here are 10 facts about Salman that you may or may not know.

Salman could have become a pro swimmer if he had so wanted. He was a swim champ at school and even tipped to represent India.

Salman's favourite actor is Sylvester Stallone and favourite actress, Hema Malini.

Salman was offered the lead in Abbas-Mustan's Baazigar but the idea of playing a negative character didn't appeal to him. The role went to Shah Rukh Khan and made him famous.

Even though Salman has been ambassador of a shoe brand, he prefers going barefoot in real life.

Salman always wears a turquoise stone bracelet on and off the screen. His father Salim Khan also wears a similar bracelet and considers it to be very lucky.

Salman reportedly flew his own cook to London from Mumbai to dish up biryani to the cast and crew of the movie London Dreams who were tired of eating continental food.

The actor loves to drive and is fond of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Land Cruisers.

Salman loves Chinese food and his favourite restaurant is China Garden in Mumbai.

Salman has a soap fixation. His bathroom at home is stacked with soap of every sort and he especially likes those made with natural fruit and vegetable extracts.

Salman is the subject of two fatwas issued by Muslim organisations - one relates to the wax statue of him in Madame Tussaud's, the second is in connection to his presence at Ganesh Chaturthi pujas. In both cases, the fatwas allege that he contravened the Islamic law that forbids the worship of idols.

Journey of Sunny Leone from porn to Bollywood star

‘Jism 2’ babe Sunny Leone was raised in a conservative Punjabi home. But her journey from being the girl-next-door to a porn star has been quite interesting.

While talking to a popular entertainment website, Sunny Leone narrated her path from being Karen Malhotra to what she is now. She recounted how as a sneaky teenager, she chanced upon a DVD of an adult movie in her Punjabi home in Canada but as soon as she saw the video, she quickly turned it off and kept it back for fear of being caught.

Few years later, at the age of 19, Sunny again saw a porn movie with her friends. Here is what she says of the experience: “It was interesting with young people, all inside a house playing games and running around naked. It was cool!”

For some extra pocket money, she worked at a bakery and a tax and retirement firm. When their family moved to the US, she did two years of college before she became the Penthouse Pet of the Year in 2003. After that some modeling assignments poured into her kitty and then suddenly, she got a proposal from an ‘agent’ for doing porn movies.

Sunny agreed to do porn films as the prospect of earning more income lured her. However, she felt that sleeping with random people was a difficult job. She christened herself as Sunny since it sounded fun while ex-editor of Penthouse suggested her to change her second name to Leone.

She did not care for the world for her conscious decision to enter the adult movie sector, but she was concerned for her parents. When she told them of her decision to take up porn films, they were shocked but they did not disown her or stopped communicating with her. But after some time, they did accept her choice.

Sunny also mentioned in the interview that she does not have even a single porn movie DVD at her US home and no one can ever find out what she does for a living.

She asserts that she is not apologetic for her profession and has accepted the way she is!
Two films down in Bollywood and still one of the most talked about sensations in the country. But, porn star turned film star Sunny Leone's journey into Bollywood hasn't been as smooth as it seems.
We take you through the same.

Canadian import first hit headlines in 2011, when she was called to participate in Bigg Boss. That's when her journey to stardom began. The adult star caused quite a stir and gained almost 8000 followers on Twitter.
It was during her stay in the Bigg Boss house that Sunny was approached by filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who entered the house to offer her the lead role in Jism 2, which was directed by his

daughter Pooja Bhatt. Jism 2 went onto earn 349.7 million rupees (US$6.4 million) in three weeks and earned around $100,000 overseas. The sexy siren has just taken over a new role- that of an item girl. The actress sizzled in 'Laila teri le legi' from Sanjay Gupta's multi-starrer, Shootout At Wadala. Sunny Leone will be next seen in Ekta Kapoor's Ragini MMS, which is said to crossover horror movie. She also played a major role in movie Jackpot. And, that's not all, the sensation has quite a few brand endorsements under her belt. Interestingly, she's endorsing a mobile phone, a condom brand and a drink called XXX at the same time.

Yaariyan review, a total waste of time and money

"There is no valid reason for you to watch Divya Khosla Kumar's Yaariyan. It is dull, boring, pathetic and doesn't seem to get over. Have you ever tried Indian, Italian, American, Continental cuisines all together in the same evening

Dedh Ishqiya review, a must watch movie

Despite the near-fatal outcome of their misdemeanours in the first film, Khalu and Babban are far from reformed. Khalu arrives in the palace of Mahmudabad where the beauteous Begum Para (Madhuri Dixit) is hosting a festival of poetry and music. He passes himself off as a nawaab. The intention is to loot the palace but Khalu falls in love. On the other hand the Begum, a widow, is looking for the right match. When Babban arrives in Mahmudabad, he falls for Muniya (Huma Qureshi), the Begum's maid. The women are more deceptive than Khalu and Babban can imagine, we realise as the reels roll.

Director Abhishek Chaubey goes one up with treatment in Dedh Ishqiya, seamlessly fusing his tale of love in the time of intrigue with suspense and humour. He also reserves ample space to excel for each of his talented actors.

Statuesque in screen presence and dancing to Birju Maharaj's beat as only she can, Madhuri would perhaps have hijacked all limelight if not for Naseeruddin Shah. The veteran actor casts an underplayed spell as Khalujaan, his rough-hewn avatar as a conman only rivalled in perfection by the gravitas he lends to his royal guise.

Arshad Warsi has pleasantly slipped into a comfort zone when it comes to striking the right chemistry with Naseer. Their scenes together remain a highlight and Arshad is impressive in the way he measures up to the veteran.

Huma Qureshi's character comes alive only in the later half. She adds a sexy spark amid the seasoned cast. An act you simply can't ignore comes from Vijay Raaz. He smoothly blends his streaks as the gullible lover obsessed with Begum Para and the hardboiled goon who lives by the gun.

Dedh Ishqiya makes desi go dangerous all over again. It's a whopper of a start for Bollywood in 2014. In a line, not to be missed.

While critics had panned Samir Tiwari's Mr Joe B Carvalho for the lack of proper script and good direction,

There was a large section of the audience that went for Sholay simply for the fun of watching the classic Bollywood film on the silver screen.

Sholay opened with
Rs. 1.50 crore collections and further picked up on Saturday, collecting Rs. 2.25 crore. The 3D movie Arshad Warsi and Vijay Raaz were the lone crowd-attractions for Mr Joe B Carvalho.

Dhoom 3 box office collection till date

Despite the arrival of two new films, "Dhoom 3" keeps on dominating the Indian box office. The Aamir Khan starrer is selling strong even in its third week at the ticket windows.
The action-thriller minted around ₹3.5 crore on its third Saturday from Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions, as per early estimates. The overall total of the film now stands at ₹263.95 crore.
"Dhoom 3- All Languages 3rd Friday Hindi Rs 3.03 Cr Tamil & Telugu Rs 0.11 Cr Total Rs 3.14 Cr Grand Total:- Rs 260.45 Cr.
The film is continuing its record-breaking run at theaters in India, as well as the international markets. In two weeks, the film has made a business of about ₹149.47 crore from overseas box offices.
"#Dhoom3 *Overseas total* till yesterday [3rd week Friday]: $ 24.01 million [₹ 149.47 cr].
The worldwide total of the film, after 15 days, now stands at ₹413.42 crore.
The collections would go down eventually when "Dhoom 3" will enter its fourth week box office run. Next week two films - Madhuri Dixit-Nene's "Dedh Ishqiya" and "Yaariyan" - are set to release and will affect the business of "Dhoom 3" in India.
It's very unlikely that the film would create a ₹300 crore club in India, as its collections have already slowed down. However, at the worldwide box office, the film is entering the ₹500 crore club.
The film, which is the third installment in the Dhoom franchise, is produced under the Yash Raj banner. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film also features Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Katrina Kaif in important roles.
